Ankle & Foot Arthritis

Ankle & Foot Arthritis

Arthritis is a common ailment that causes pain in the joints of the foot and ankle. There are many causes of arthritis ranging from damage due to a previous injury; systemic illnesses like rheumatoid arthritis and gout; and increased wear and tear from abnormal function of the joints. Generally, x-rays or an MRI are utilized to evaluate the extent of the damage and to develop a treatment plan.

Treatments are dependent on the activity level of the patient as well as the type of arthritis present. Some people are able to control the pain by changing their shoe type or activities; in some cases, medication is also used to decrease any inflammation present in the joints. Ultimately, if there is significant damage to the joint and pain continues to persist, surgery can be considered. Surgery for arthritis should be geared at restoring normal function of the affected joints with the goal of returning someone back to their desired activities or sports.
